Axle shafts are an integral part of a truck’s drivetrain. Situated within your axle housing, axle shafts work alongside your differentials to effectively transfer power from your driveshaft to your wheel hubs. At Blackwater Diesel, we’ll maintain, repair, and replace axle shafts within medium and heavy-duty fleets of all kinds.

Medium and Heavy-Duty Axle Housing Explained

Every medium and heavy-duty truck has a set of axle housings that protect drivetrain components, support suspension components and keep your wheels in place. These axle housings are full of lubricant, as both your axle shafts and differential gears need adequate lubrication in order to remain in good condition. Although this axle housing doesn’t need to be maintained, the components within it certainly do. The gear oil that lubricates your axle shafts and differential gears will break down with usage, meaning it must be changed. The average service interval is generally 30 to 60 thousand miles, depending on what the truck is used for.

The Dangers of Leaking Gear Oil

A leak from one part of your axle housing affects the entire assembly. For example, if you have fluid leaking from one of your axle seals, the entire axle housing will be low on gear oil. This means your axle shafts, differential gears, and even your primary driveshaft components that are connected to your differential will be affected. Excess friction can result in premature component wear and even complete failure if the leaks are severe. To prevent this from happening, be sure to inspect your fleet of trucks before every trip. If you see leaking gear oil, call Blackwater Diesel right away!

Symptoms of Damaged Axles
