Common Coolant System Problems
The diesel engines in your medium and heavy-duty fleet produce a lot of heat and, as such, require powerful coolant systems to keep that heat under control. At Blackwater Diesel, we’ll repair, maintain, and even replace large coolant system components. Call today to book an appointment! There are a number of coolant system problems that can occur in medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. The most common are outlined below.

Malfunctioning Fan Clutches
A malfunctioning fan clutch is by far one of the most common problems with heavy and medium-duty coolant systems. For those unaware, your fan clutch is the mechanism that engages and disconnects your cooling fan. If this clutch fails, your fan may never engage, which means you won’t get enough cool air flowing through your radiator. On the other hand, if the clutch never disengages, you’re always stuck with a loud and obnoxious fan, significantly decreasing your fuel mileage. At Blackwater Diesel, we consider ourselves to be fan-clutch experts. We’ll have your fan clutch replaced or repaired in no time!
Old Coolant
If you haven’t changed the coolant in your fleet truck’s engines, you may consider doing so sooner rather than later! When coolant is used for longer than a manufacturer recommends, you run the risk of letting it break down and clog up vital coolant system components. For example, broken-down coolant may flow through your radiator and plug valuable heat dispersal routes. This will surely cause your engine to overheat and must be avoided at all costs.
Transmission and Oil Coolers
Transmission coolers and oil coolers work alongside your radiator-based coolant system. Rather than using a dedicated fluid to absorb heat, these coolers use engine oil and transmission fluid to aid in the heat dispersal process. This means the heat absorbed by your engine’s oil and transmission fluid is dispersed, which, in turn, allows engines to perform better.
